Le but du TEST OF ENGLISH AS
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
The purpose of the TEST OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (T.O.E.F.L.) is to evaluate the English language ability of those whose first language is not English.
Most colleges and universities
in the United States and anglophone Canada use TOEFL results in acceptance procedures for international students. Furthermore, several companies also use TOEFL results to recruit
non-anglophones.
It is mandatory to take the TOEFL to participate in the Study Abroad program.
The Educational Testing Service (ETS), a private organization based in Princeton, New Jersey, created the TOEFL and sees to the development and management of the test today.
IMPORTANT: The summary that follows does not exempt the reader from closely reading the information available on the website www.ets.org/toefl, as well as on the information sheet available in PDF form on said website.
The MBA Institute holds no responsibility for the administration of and registration for the TOEFL.
Registering for the TOEFL is a personal process but it is very strongly recommended for those students interested in participating in the Study Abroad program.
N.B. : Since Fall 2005, the TOEFL is
administered online (iBT TOEFL) without the use of a CD-rom as was the case of the CBT TOEFL (Computer-based TOEFL). However, the new iBT TOEFL still takes place in secure centers
in numerous cities
WHAT DOES THE iBT TOEFL CONSIST OF?
The iBT TOEFL (Internet-based TOEFL) is administered online in secured centers. This new TOEFL option lasts a little over 4 hours and consists of 4 sections:
Listening: This section tests your ability to understand English as it is spoken today in North America with everyday vocabulary, expressions and grammar. It also consists of questions asking you to interpret the attitude, the degree of certainty, the objectives and the motivations of the person speaking.
Speaking (new): This section measures your ability to express yourself in English. You will be asked to elaborate on your opinion on a given subject or to comment on a text or dialogue that you will read or listen to
Reading: This section measures your ability to understand non-technical texts. In addition to the usual multiple choice questions from the CBT TOEFL, you will be asked to rank information by category, to fill in tables and to complete a summary of the text.
Writing: This section measures your ability to write a text in English on a specific subject. You should be able to generate, organize and support ideas using fluent, written English in an essay. Contrary to the CBT TOEFL, this part consists of an exercise in which you must write a text about a read or listened-to subject. The iBT TOEFL does not allow you to write by hand, and the computer will be equipped with both QWERTY (English) and AZERTY (French) keyboards.
Unlike the CBT TOEFL, the iBT TOEFL is not computer-adaptive, that is it does not adapt to your English level. In addition, most of the questions will require several skills at once; for example, you could be asked to use your writing comprehension skill and written or oral expression skill in the same question.
